LREMC is accepting applications to attend basketball camps at two NC universities this summer. Middle school boys can apply for a scholarship to attend the Carolina Basketball School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Middle school girls can apply for a spot at the Wolfpack Women's Basketball Camp at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
Karen Lloyd, Manager of Engineering Services, represented LREMC at the NC State Women's Basketball Camp in 1976. She received instruction that helped her become a better rebounder. The camp focuses on mastering the fundamentals of the game, like how to block out properly and what stance to use to move quicker on defense. Lloyd carried these lessons with her into her high school basketball career.
Participants get to work with coaches and players at the college. When Karen attended, Coach Kay Yow was the head coach of the NC State Wolfpack women's basketball team. Coach Kay Yow had over 700 career wins. "Meeting and working with Coach Kay Yow for me was a treat that I'll always remember," Karen shared. "It was a great experience."
Karen highly recommends youth take advantage of this excellent opportunity. It will help them become better players on the court. It also gives them an early experience of being away from home and meeting new people. "They develop skills on and off the court."
To apply, students must be a rising sixth or seventh-grade student at a school in LREMC's service area. Applicants will be judged on their academics, extracurricular activities, and essay submission. The application must be submitted by March 31, with the camps happening in June 2023.
