CIS Academy presented its Write It & Read It night on May 12. After a meal, students shared entries from their journals with the attendees. Through a Bright Ideas Grant, Lumbee River Membership Electric helped purchase journals and other materials for the students to complete their projects.
Due to learning virtually during the covid pandemic, students did not write as much because they were not in the classroom, and some writing skills fell below grade level. Students were required to write in their journals twice to improve their writing. Several genres were addressed during the year, including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Students composed stories from different points of view. Students' ability to stay on prompt and their mechanic and grammar usage improved over the year. The students were stronger writers because of this process.
The Write It & Read It was the final activity for the students. They each selected one entry from their journal to read for parents, school staff, and guests. Elaine Chavis, LREMC Board Member, and her husband Jerry attended the event. "Public speaking is not an easy task for anyone," said Myrna Strickland, Student Support Specialist at CIS Academy. "Though a bit nervous, all the students did an awesome job."
