Roderick McMillan, LREMC member, is the proud owner of MG3 Farms, a family-owned Hydroponic farm in Maxton, NC. They use hydroponics to grow various leafy greens, including lettuces, Swiss chard, kale, collards, cabbages, and mustard greens. They also produce herbs; cilantro, basil, and parsley.
Hydroponic farming is an innovative approach that places the roots of plants in a liquid nutrient solution. Using this method, farmers can grow plants without using soil. Farmers can bring food production indoors to utilize climate and lighting controls to maximize output and produce better produce. "It's clean and efficient," said McMillan. "Plants are off of the ground, so we don't have to use any pesticides or herbicides."
Hydroponic farming gives farmers the ability to grow food anytime and anywhere in the world. As this technology is researched more and expanded, endless possibilities are available.
In 2016, McMillan wanted to go into business for himself. "I researched the process, watched hours of YouTube videos, and studied anything I could find on Hydroponics," McMillan said. He presented a business plan to his parents. They backed his dream and formed MG3. MG3 now produces plants in a state-of-the-art greenhouse that is over 10,000 square feet. Cooling pads cool the greenhouse in the summer, and it is heated by wood in the winter. It also features geothermal tubes that serve as an energy source.
McMillan's family has done traditional row crop farming, producing corn, wheat, and soybeans. The formation of MG3 was a part of the family's expansion into fresh farming in an effort to diversify their revenue streams. The venture established them as a trusted provider of fresh produce in the area.
MG3 sells its produce to local restaurants, direct to consumers, and Universities. Robeson Community College, St. Andrews, and UNCP all have jumped at the opportunity to support a local business while providing fresh, locally grown produce to their employees and students. Fresh strawberries have been a hit with the community.
Times are changing. More people want to eat fresh and live healthier lifestyles. MG3 is a forward-thinking operation that will provide innovative solutions to meet the growing demand of the future. "We're happy to supply clean, fresh food to people on a weekly basis," said McMillan.
