Fiber Expansion to Rural Communities

Thursday | July 6, 2023
All News

As our world becomes increasingly digitized, access to high-speed internet is becoming more and more essential. However, many rural communities in our service area still need more reliable access to this critical resource. This is where fiber expansion comes in.

Fiber expansion refers to the deployment of fiber-optic cables to rural areas, providing high-speed internet access to previously underserved communities. As a Lumbee River EMC member, you may wonder why this matters to you. The benefits of fiber expansion to rural communities are numerous foremost; high-speed internet access is essential for economic development in rural communities. Many businesses and industries require reliable, high-speed internet to operate effectively, and without it, rural areas may struggle to attract new businesses and create jobs. With fiber expansion, rural communities can become more connected and competitive, increasing their economic vitality and quality of life.

In addition to economic benefits, fiber expansion has significant educational advantages. In today's digital age, access to high-speed internet is essential for students to complete homework, conduct research, and access educational resources. Fiber expansion can help level the playing field for rural students, giving them the same opportunities as their urban counterparts.

Another critical benefit of fiber expansion is improved healthcare access. Telemedicine, or the delivery of healthcare services remotely through technology, has become increasingly important in recent years, particularly in rural areas where access to healthcare can be limited. With high-speed internet access, patients in rural communities can receive remote consultations, access medical records and resources, and even medical treatment from their homes.

Finally, smart grid technologies made possible through fiber-optic cables can help LREMC better manage our energy resources and improve reliability.

In conclusion, fiber expansion is a critical tool for bringing high-speed internet access to rural communities, and LREMC is uniquely positioned to deliver these benefits to our members. By promoting economic development, improving educational opportunities, expanding healthcare access, and providing environmental benefits, fiber expansion can help improve the quality of life for rural residents and strengthen our communities for years to come.
