Membership is the heart of the co-op
As a new member, you become part of more than 50,000 other members who own the cooperative.
Membership means you are an owner
Unlike other utilities, Lumbee River EMC is a not-for-profit organization whose members share annual revenues that exceed annual operating expenses (margins).
- Margins are allocated back to members each year, giving each member part ownership.
- The Board of Directors evaluates the cooperative’s financial position annually.
- If finances are sound, a portion of your investment may be returned as a Capital Credit.
- Keep your mailing address updated so you receive any credits owed, even after service ends.
As members, we are connected by community, concern for our neighbors, environmental stewardship, and shared financial well-being.
Capital Credits: Your ownership in the cooperative
Because Lumbee River EMC is a not-for-profit cooperative, any revenues that exceed operating costs are considered margins. Those margins are allocated back to members over time as Capital Credits, reflecting your ownership in the cooperative.
When the cooperative’s financial position is strong, the Board of Directors may approve retiring a portion of those credits and returning them to eligible members.
