The co-op’s focus is always to provide safe, reliable energy to its members every day at the most reasonable rate possible. While wholesale power costs have escalated annually, the cooperative has shouldered the impact of these adjustments throughout the years to hold its rates steady for members. Because of continued increases in the cost of wholesale power this year and additional ones scheduled for the next several years, Lumbee River EMC cannot absorb the total amounts.
To continue keeping cooperative finances strong, the Board of Directors approved a rate adjustment to become effective in January 2024 to ensure the co-op can meet expenses and remain fiscally sound. Even with the adjustment, Lumbee River EMC rates will remain among the lowest in the region.

With increases in both energy and demand charges passed along to the cooperative, the co-op’s power costs increased by 3% this year, with additional increases scheduled for the next several years. Due to inflation and supply chain issues, expenses related to required distribution equipment such as wire, transformers, conduits, poles, and meters continue to rise. Considering the need to continue delivering safe and reliable energy and to keep the cooperative financially sound, the Board decided to implement an increase that equates to an average of about 7% for members.
